We are thrilled to announce that Rory Everitt Design received a prestigious 2026 Oregon Home Structure + Style Award for Best in Design, recognizing a whole-home design for a house over 3,000 sq ft in size.

Best in Design: Whole House Over 3,000 Sq. Ft.

This new build was designed for a young family with two elementary-school-aged children, two cats, and aspirations for a flock of chickens. The homeowners wanted to deftly weave together three interconnected themes: a strong indoor-outdoor connection, easy entertaining, and a focus on life's simple pleasures.

In close collaboration with Thallon Architecture, we optimized the floor plan to take full advantage of abundant views and natural light while creating a deeply satisfying progression of spaces. Electronics are discreetly hidden away, with ceiling speakers providing a blanket of beautiful sound, practical device charging tucked into the mudroom, and a dedicated TV room with surround sound and a pocket door that allows it to be closed off when desired.

In a nod to the home's Craftsman character, preference was given to natural materials, used in ways that celebrate their elegance and inherent sense of history. Harmony is achieved through a restrained material palette and careful attention to geometry, such as matching the profile of the custom cabinet doors to the mullion profiles of the casement windows. Moments of joy are introduced through wallpaper, artwork, and thoughtfully applied color, particularly in the downstairs powder room and drinks nook, as well as the upstairs TV room, breakfast nook, and bathrooms.

Two especially distinctive features are the suspended glass shelves separating the dining and living rooms and the natural jute rug applied to the ceiling of the breakfast nook. In both cases, the homeowners are rewarded aesthetically and acoustically through improved sound absorption. The furnishings draw heavily from a mid-century modern vernacular, while unique antiques, personal artwork, and travel mementos keep the interiors feeling collected and fresh.

The result is a home that makes entertaining feel effortless. On Friday evenings, family friends gather on the patio to enjoy a glass of wine while the children run into the adjacent field to pick blackberries for dessert. When dinner is ready, the homeowners call them back by ringing the vintage brass dinner bell mounted beside the patio door.
