Using Nature in Interior Design
Create a healthy and calming atmosphere by incorporating ideas from the emerging science of biophilic design.
Sunlight is one of nature’s tonics for health and good mood.
Natural Light
Natural light can transform a room. It makes spaces feel larger and more inviting. And when deciding what chair to plop down on, we all subconsciously gravitate towards the bright side of the room. In the seminal architecture book, A Pattern Language, Professor Alexander and his collaborators emphasized the importance of sunlight on the well-being of building occupants.
There’s a reason the pinnacle of corporate achievement is getting “the corner office” - you get windows on two sides of the room! All that natural light makes a measurable impact on health and well-being, especially compared to working in a window-less inner office.
Ideas to Maximize Natural Light
Add windows. During a renovation, think strategically about where to place additional windows to let in sunlight and establish stronger connection with the outdoor.
Use mirrors: Placing mirrors strategically can reflect light around a room and create the illusion of more space. We used this technique in the restaurant Domek.
Choose lighter hues: Light-colored walls and furniture can help reflect light, making a room feel brighter.
Opt for sheer curtains: Sheers allow light to filter in while still providing some privacy. They also soften the light wonderfully, helping to protect textiles from harsh mid-summer sun and softening the mood.
Swap in bottoms-up blinds: Bottom-up cellular blinds allow you to block lower sight-lines, while leaving the upper part of your window open to the trees and sky.
Incorporating mirrors into a room’s millwork enhances the feeling of lightness in a room.
Plants
Add greenery to your space, to bring a touch of nature indoors. Floor plants, hanging plants, and small potted plants all have a place. Choose plants that work for the level of investment you’re willing to make.
Despair not! There are solid options for everyone, even people who have a history of neglecting their houseplants.
Natural Materials
Lean into selecting natural materials as much as possible in all aspects of construction and decorating. Real wood and stone, and natural textiles and fabrics are superior to man-made materials in many ways:
Inherent beauty. The naturally-occurring patterns are gorgeous and never quite replicated by synethetics.
Better physical health. The science is still young, but petroleum-based synthetics are more likely to have unpleasant off-gassing and microplastic pollution.
Authenticity. Natural materials have an integrity and quality that is clear when touching and using them.
Of course there are applications in which artificial materials make sense. For example, synthetic exterior siding will have a much longer life span on your building than most natural elements, which break down faster when subjected to the elements. And there can be ethical and sustainability reasons to choose synthetic products, such as vinyl vs leather. But always consider the more natural choice first.
