  • Elegance meets utility: We blend chic design with hard-working materials and advanced appliances, creating spaces that make cooking delightful.

As part of a kitchen remodel, one major decision we guide homeowners through is what material(s) to use for their countertops.

Thoughtful details, striking quartz counters, and colorful cabinets create a fun and functional kitchen remodel.

Countertop Material Options

We most often work with 5 categories of countertop material. These offer differing price points, pros, and cons and so must be carefully considered:

  1. Natural stone, such as marble, quartzite, granite, and soapstone. Cut out of the earth, these have authenticity, uniqueness, and beauty can handle high heat.

  2. Engineered stone, such as quartz. Usually made from ground up stone bound together with resin, these offer high durability.

  3. Sintered stone, such as the Dekton brand. A newer technology similar to engineered stone, but without the resin so it isn’t affected by heat or UV light.

  4. Acrylic solid surface, such as the Cambria brand. An older technology popular in the 1990s, there is still a place for these non-porous surfaces that are cost-effective, repairable and formable in many creative ways.

  5. Tile, such as large-format ceramic tiles or real stone tiles. These offer a cost-effective way to capture the beauty of stone or incorporate strong personality.

Inter-play with Other Materials

The countertops will be experienced by you and your house guests as part of an assemblage of materials, textures, and colors, so it’s critical to understand the interplay between materials. In the left example, we assess wood options that pair well with carerra marble. In the right example, Rory recommended these 3 blue cabinet colors as pairing well with the 3 quartz options the client was focused on. We also carefully considered selections for flooring, wall, color and window blinds.

Choosing slabs

Natural stone, engineered stone, and sintered stone are all created or imported as large slabs of uniform thickness. Once we’ve narrowed in on a particular material category, it’s important to view slabs in person before making a final choice. This shopping can take time but is worth it to find the perfect stone for your kitchen.
