Case study: Decorating a Whole Home

MCM sideboard, glass shelves, and record player

We created a special moment for our host to entertain.

Summary

Located in North Eugene, near Umso Park, this client wanted help with a major decorating project. He had recently purchased a town home and while the rooms were in good shape, it was a blank slate for furnishings and decor. He hired Rory Everitt Design to guide him through deciding furniture arrangement for the living room, dining room, TV room, home office and primary bedroom. We then shopped for and purchased items, quickly creating a charming bachelor pad.

Before & After

Before: The house came with some furniture that we quickly decided to ditch in favor of building our own palette of scale, form, color, and materials.

After: The finished home is refined, masculine, and welcoming. It speaks to the client’s desire for clean lines, no frills, and some fun personality. He is particularly fond of new furnishings that draw from the best of mid century modern design.

Project Goals

  • Create an inviting and personal retreat for the client, his teenage daughter, and his 2 large dogs.

  • Use space intelligently, so no room is wasted or rarely used.

  • Support a variety of regular activities, such as cooking, dinner parties, work from home days, and righteous Super bowl parties.

Key Design Elements

  • Clean Lines: The furniture mirrors the house, with the use of strong lines, quality craftsmanship, and minimal adornment.

  • A little contrast: We introduced curved shapes and layered textures and complimentary neutral colors to balance out the strong brown wood lines.

  • Dog-friendly: Performance fabrics and hair-hiding textiles were important criteria to shop for.

Client Experience

Rory Everitt Design guided the client through each step with clarity and efficiency:

  • Onboarding discussion, to understand functional and aesthetic needs.

  • Creation of a '“digital twin” computer model, to visualize the space in 3D.

  • Mapped the programmatic needs to the individual rooms.

  • Determined ideal floor plan and what size and type of furniture should go where.

  • Shopped room by room, collaboratively picking out individual pieces. The client wanted to handle delivery and installation himself.

The Result

The finished home delivered on exactly what the client had in mind but didn’t initially know how to articulate. He now feels very much at home and loves having friends over to enjoy the space together.
